Autism is a brain development disorder that impairs social interaction and communication, and causes restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old.
April was Autism Awareness Month in which many activities were planned to help raise awareness about Autism and people living with Autism. One event is The Elias Tembenis Walk for Autism is a journey across America to benefit families struggling to pay for autism therapy and medical services. Two friends of the Tembenis Family, Robert Williams and Bobby Genese, both of Worcester, MA, will begin their walk in May 2008. The walk will start on Route 50 in San Francisco and end on the Discovery Trail in Washington, DC. The estimated time of completion for the 3,000 walk is 10 to 12 months. Another event is "Bounce for Autism." There were six "bounces" held across the country throughout the month of April to help raise awareness about Autism. There is also a "virtual bounce for autism" that lasts from April 2008-April 2009 and can be accessed from Autism Society of America's Bounce for Autism page on their website. This virtual bounce is for people who do not live near a site of an actual bounce, but would still like to help raise and donate funds for the cause.
The six scheduled Bounces were in Maryland, Illinois, California, Oregon, Arkansas, and Texas. These Bounces, in association with Pump It Up, "raise awareness and funds for autism care, support, treatment and research."
